“During the documentary, Senator Smith said his grandfather’s role in the war was “miniscule.” Perhaps it was. But the story of his life and death is a major achievement. And the war could not have been won without Major Smith and millions like him, who, despite the pull of home and family insisted on doing what they thought was right. I can only recommend it as an object lesson in what duty, self sacrifice and courage really mean.”

Pennsylvania-born Faith Bower and her five children agonized over her husband’s decision to volunteer for the British Army. Her husband, Bermudian-born Major Toby Smith, lost his life at the battle of Overloon in 1944. This film weaves a haunting portrait etched in Toby’s own words through the letters he lovingly wrote to Faith as he anguished over loyalty to them and the war against the Nazis.
This firsthand account uniquely re-captures the war-time era and its impact on a family, leaving a lasting legacy of what it meant to serve one’s King and Country.
